Your guide to Ramadan 2013

Iftars, cultural dos and don'ts plus more traditional activities in the UAE

Your guide to Ramadan 2013

From iftars to try throughout the Holy Month to cultural dos and don’ts plus ways to make sure you’re dressed appropriately, Time Out helps you make the most of Ramadan.

Wherever you live or work in the city, you’ve no doubt heard that Ramadan has now begun, but what else do you know about this special period?

The ninth month in the Islamic lunar calendar, the Holy Month is seen as a time for reflection and this year will be the first time since 1980 that Ramadan has fallen in mid-July.

For the duration of the month, Muslims – not just those in the UAE, but around the world – fast completely during the hours of daylight, with a view to self-improvement through abstaining from negative behaviour.

For non-Muslims, there are some extra considerations you will need to make as you go about your business in the UAE (see our list of dos and dont’s) but Ramadan offers the perfect opportunity to learn more and gain a better understanding of Islamic culture and customs – as well as a break from Dubai’s typically fast pace of life throughout the rest of the year.

To help you make the most of the Holy Month, our links below take in everything from how to dress appropriately to where to enjoy a traditional iftar meal and if you’re not fasting, where to have a respectfully discreet lunch. Ramadan Kareem!
