Raghida Dergham is one of the Arab world’s most well known female journalists. She’s a columnist and senior diplomatic correspondent for the London-based Al Hayat newspaper.
Born in Beirut, she worked her way through college at SUNY Plattsburgh. In 1974 she became a reporter in Boston, followed by creation of a bilingual weekly radio show. In 1976 she became a foreign correspondent in New York. “In my culture, for a woman to enter the field of politics, in terms of journalism, this is not the norm. A woman cannot think this way. A woman cannot do this,” she has said.
Dergham has been a columnist with the Al-Hayat newspaper
since 1989, and has also appeared as an analyst on a slew of news channels, including
the BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera. Her work has appeared in publications including
the New York Times, Washington Post and Newsweek.
She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the World
Economic Forum, among others, and lectures at leading US universities Harvard,
Princeton, Columbia and Georgetown.
