Abu Dhabi gov’t u-turns on visa rule change

Authorities scrap rule change which required valid tenancy contract for visa application

Residents in Abu Dhabi will no longer require a valid tenancy contact before renewing their residency visa after authorities in the capital u-turned on a rule change announced only last week.

Abu Dhabi’s General Department of Naturalisation and Foreign Affairs said that residents would need to present an attested residency tenancy contract as well as recent utility bill before renewing their residency visa in new regulations effective June 1 2012.

Authorities on Monday however said the new rule no longer applied, local media reported, citing spokespeople from the Abu Dhabi Systems and Information Centre and the Ministry of Interior.

Under the original proposal, which only applied to Abu Dhabi, residents would also have to submit valid mobile and landline numbers.

Dubai e-government last week said the new system would not apply to residents in Dubai. “Visa renewal in Dubai not yet affected by attestation of rent/utility bills. Currently only for Abu Dhabi. We’ll keep you informed,” the department said in on Twitter.
