Former England international footballer David Beckham has reportedly held talks with wealthy Qatari investors regarding his new US franchise.

Beckham, who starred for clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid and Los Angeles Galaxy, is in the process of setting up a Miami-based team for the Major League Soccer competition.

A spokesman for Qatar Sports Investment, which owns one of Beckham’s former sides Paris St Germain, confirmed that it had been approached by Beckham.

“Yes, David Beckham has approached us. As of today, no decision has been taken,” they told newspaper Le Parisien. The newspaper reported though that Qatar had made the first move in negotiations.

The newspaper also said that other global investors had expressed an interest in working with Beckham, with some believed to have progressed further with talks than the Qataris.

Priorities for the Miami project include finding a suitable site in the Florida city to develop a stadium and appointing a CEO.

Qatar already has extensive interests in football, including the ownership of current French league champions Paris St Germain. Qatar Airways, the tiny Gulf state’s national carrier, is sponsor of Spanish title-holders FC Barcelona.
