The body of a dead stowaway was found on Saturday in the landing gear of an Emirates cargo plane at Amsterdam’s Schiphol airport.
An Emirates spokesperson confirmed that the body was discovered on arrival in Amsterdam and is currently being investigated by authorities.
“Emirates can confirm that on September 12, a body was found on Emirates’ freighter aircraft in Amsterdam which had arrived from Nairobi. The matter is currently with the authorities in Amsterdam and we are unable to comment further at this time.”
The discovery came as Europe struggles with the most serious refugee crisis since World War Two.
Roughly 1,500 asylum seekers, mostly from war-torn countries in the Middle East and Africa, arrive in the Netherlands per week and Dutch reception centres are near capacity.
