Dubai Customs has foiled a bid to smuggle a haul of narcotics containing around 1.5kg of heroine, an official said on Friday.
Ali Al Mugahwi, director of Airport Operations at Dubai Customs, said that an inspector suspected a passenger at Terminal 3 who came from an African country.
He said the passenger appeared to be confused and kept constantly looking around which increased the inspector’s suspicions.
The passenger was stopped for luggage inspection and at first nothing illegal was found.
However when he was put through the body scan, unusual items were seen inside his stomach.
Al Mugahwi said that when asked about it, the passenger confessed that he swallowed 15 tablets. He also admitted that he came to Dubai to deliver the tablets to an accomplice.
The passenger was transferred to the Anti-Narcotics Department office at the Airport Terminal 3 and, after being admitted to hospital, 95 tablets were found inside his stomach.
The contraband of heroin weighed 1.5kg, Al Mugahwi added.
“It is mandatory to improve and upgrade inspection taking into account the millions of passengers dealt with and the huge amounts of cargo tackled through Dubai’s air, sea and land entries everyday,” he said.
