Bahrain’s bid to launch a Gulf radio station next month has gained support with officials at other Gulf government broadcasters backing the move, it was reported.
Speaking after a meeting of senior radio officials, Bahrain Information Ministry assistant under-secretary for radio affairs Yusuf Mustafa said the new radio station would contribute to preserving the traditions, culture, art and literature of the six GCC countries, according to Kuwait state news agency KUNA.
Mustafa said participants approved the initial launch of the Bahrain-based radio station to be named ‘This is the Arabian Gulf’ and will be launched by the end of the month.
The GCC countries will assess the new radio station for three months with engineers to determine the frequency modulation (FM) in every country, KUNA reported.
Mustafa said that once approved, Gulf radio stations would launch promotion campaigns for the new station.
Mustafa said state-backed Kuwait Radio had given its counterparts at Bahrain Radio a copy of its programs for non-Arab listeners in English, Urdu, Filipino and Persian.
The GCC comprises Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, the UAE and Oman.
