More than 100,000 expats will be arrested and deported from Kuwait in the country’s largest ever crackdown on illegal residents, an Interior Ministry official has revealed.
The foreigners had arrived in Kuwait legally to work but had since either violated the terms of their visas or had let them expire, Interior Ministry Assistant Undersecretary for National and Passport Affairs Sheikh Mazen Al Jarrah said, according to local media. Some were in hiding.
While he said a plan had been finalised he did not detail when it would be implemented.
About 25,000 Indians, who make up the largest expat community in the country, are among those being targeted, as well as Bangladeshis at 20,000, Sri Lankans at 15,000, Egyptians 7,000, Filipinos 6,700, Syrians 5,250, Pakistanis 2,500, Iranians 750 and 1,300 Iraqi violators, Sheikh Mazen said.
Others who assist illegal expats or hide them also face penalties, including fines, a jail sentence or deportation.
