People caught smuggling drugs into Oman risk being executed, the Royal Oman Police (ROP) has warned.
The ROP has issued a public statement reminding citizens of the laws in place to penalise drug smugglers, according to the Times of Oman.
In the statement, Colonel Abdulrahim bin Qassem Al Farisi, general-director of drugs prevention, said the death sentence is the maximum penalty imposed in the sultanate for illegal drug trafficking.
The highest penalty for drug users is three years in jail and a fine of OMR3,000, ($7,792).
Expats, meanwhile, convicted of any of these crimes will be deported and not allowed to return to Oman.
The statement added concealment of information related to the illegal narcotics trade is punishable by a six-month to three-year jail term and fine of between OMR100 ($259) and OMR1,000 ($2,597).
However, Al Farisi said the law does not apply to drug users who ask authorities for treatment at a hospital or under a request via their family.
