Top 20 fashion trends for women this winter
The latest style must-haves from the main brands and catwalks every woman needs to be wearing

2. The Thigh-High Boot: We’ve seen them on everyone from Beyoncé to Miranda Kerr to runways of Tom Ford and Donna Karen. Thigh high boots are no doubt a crucial winter trend this season. You can pair them up with jeans, shorts, or winter dresses, just make sure not to go overboard with the rest of your outfit, as they are a statement piece on their own.

3. All You Need Is the Sixties: Most of us are familiar with the influential styles of the sixties; baby doll dresses and miniskirts were all the hype. This winter 2015, sixties stars Twiggy and Jane Birkin were the inspiration behind collections of Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, and Louis Vuitton, according to women’s fashion magazine Vogue.

4. The Sweater Dress: A knitted sweater dress is the go-to fashion trend of the season, according to women’s fashion magazine Glamour. Try one with sixties length and pair it up with thigh-high boots. Gucci designed ribbed slim-fit sweater dresses in dark winter colours. Lower-priced similar pieces can be found in shops like Bebe and Bershka.

5. Bucket Bags: I’s true that bucket bags as per their name resemble the shape of a bucket, but let’s just put it this way, if you had a bucket that looked like these bags, you would carry it around everywhere! Designer Stella McCartney has been making mini bucket bags that can be worn as cross-body bags! While Marni and Moschino chose the standard size but added a creative play of colours, patterns, prints, and textures.

6. All-Out Faux Fur: Because we finally can! Though it might sound odd for someone to be wearing fur in the Middle East, thanks to faux fur and lows in winter temperatures, it’s finally possible. Faux fur of all kinds and colours has been taking over the runways of Alexander McQueen and Fendi this season. If you’re not into a major fur look, go for fur vests or collars.

7. For The Love of Hounds-tooth: Some of you may know this print as the “tilted-checker print.” Designers have been making everything in this print; shirts, dresses, pants, skirts, scarves and more. Countless prints come and go, but hounds-tooth is here to stay! You can follow Rihanna’s lead and wear head to toe hounds-tooth, or opt for a subtler look with a hounds-tooth scarf like Kim Kardashian, either way, this print if the way to go this season. It’s been seen on Hugo Boss and Salvatore Ferragamo runways.

8. Embellished and Embroidered: The king of embellished and embroidered attire is no doubt Dolce and Gabbana. Even in its Autumn/Winter 2014-2015 collection, D&G has successfully incorporated lavish style on to their pieces. Try an embroidered knit sweater or dress to make a statement. Once these add-ons are applied to clothing, the clothing becomes an accessory in itself.

9. Coloured Leather: Leather, leather, leather! When has it NOT been in style? Fashion houses like Zadig & Voltaire and Yves Saint Laurent are making leather everything! Shirts, skirts, coats, jackets and dresses made from coloured leather are filling up the shelves at shops everywhere. Lower-priced shops like Bershka have them in shades of red, blue, and pink. Say your goodbyes to the usual dull winter colours, the brighter hues are taking over this time.

10. Sportswear: Everyone appreciates a comfortable, sporty look, which is why sportswear has been such a hit this season. From Miu Miu to Fendi, designers have been making athletic inspired outfits in every palette and texture. Shops like Zara have them in different fabrics and colours as well.

11. Feathers: In recent years, we have entered an era of fashion forward. There is nothing left that fashion houses have not experimented with, revived, or evolved. This season, it’s the time for feathers. “Soft and light, the plumes added a touch of refined elegance to each silhouette, floating breezily down the runway, as light as the wings of a bird,” Vogue on feathers as a winter trend this season. Lanvin and Alexander McQueen have been making many feathered pieces this winter.

12. Choker Necklace: What’s better than a statement choker necklace to spice up your winter wardrobe? For Balenciaga Fall/Winter 2014-2015, Alexander Wang paired knitwear with choker necklaces to give an edgy, unique feel. This piece gives a chic look as well as simultaneously providing warmth to your neck; two birds with one stone. Balmain gold choker anyone?

13. Chunky Knitwear: No longer made only in boring styles and bland colours, knitwear is now more diverse than ever. According to Vogue magazine, chunky knitwear is one of this winter’s most prominent trends, best worn in neutral tones. Runways of Marc Jacobs and Céline were filled with them this winter.

14. The Big Floppy Hat: Thankfully, there’s a whole lot of sun in the Middle East even during winter time, that’s where the big floppy hat comes in! This accessory has been seen on celebrities like Kendell Jenner and Jessica Simpson. They have been made by designers like Yves Saint Laurent this winter time. Add a wool floppy hat to a sweater dress and thigh high boots for a trendy (and warm) winter outfit!
15. The designer backpack: Most of us look back at our school days with nostalgia, perhaps that’s the idea behind Louis Vuitton and Moschino’s backpacks; transforming school attire into winter 2015’s must-have fashion accessory! They come in different prints and colours and come in handy in winter, when you want to enjoy a stroll without having to carry your bag in your hand.
16. Leather Pants: Once they were transformed from biker-chic to classy-edgy, these winter staple piece guaranteed their place in fashion for the long run. They were in last winter season, and they’re definitely in this winter season. Balmain, Balenciaga, and Diesel are making them in black as well as other colours. Pair yours with a knitted sweater to stay warm and stylish!
17. Poncho: This fashion piece has been seen on fashion’s favourite girl Olivia Palermo and Victoria Secret model Rosie Huntington. Their go-to brand for Ponchos is the classic Burberry. The new way to wear them is to hang them nonchalantly over the shoulders like a chic blanket, according to Vogue.
18. Monochrome: Head to toe in one colour is the style that has been filling the runways this season. The fun part is, every colour is trending! Kenzo and Tomford are using a lot of monochrome red looks, while Balmain is going all-out kaki. Try going full white this winter like Valentino.
19. The Midi: Fortunately for us Middle Easterners, winter is not too cold in the region. That means, midi dresses and skirts are STILL a yes this season! Starting from last season, this trend was seen on almost every designer’s runway. It’s the perfect combination of classy and sassy and can work for almost any occasion and body type. The midi length has been Kim Kardashian’s recent obsession. Tip: If your legs get too cold, pair your midi dress or skirt with some stylish knee-length boots.
20. Maxi Winter Dress: Who said maxi dresses were only for summer? Runways like Dolce & Gabbana’s Fall/Winter 2014-2015 have been filled with floor glazing winter frocks. Lower-budget shops like Miss Selfridges and Mango also have maxi winter dresses in soft and dark colours. Add a furry accessory to your casual winter gown and feel like you’re in winter land (just don’t do it at noon where the sun is still scorching!)
