Qatar falcon prices soar to $275k

Local festival see asking prices for prized birds in Gulf state reach new heights

The price of falcons on the Qatari market has soared to more than QAR1m (US$275k), bouoyed by increased domestic demand on the back of a recent festival.

Asking prices for the prized birds generally hover between QAR100,000 and QAR400,000, although some species of Gyrfalcon can fetch up to QAR1m. Gyrfalcons are the largest of all falcon species and a status symbol for royal Arab families.

Falcons in Qatar generally increase in valuation around the times falconry festivals in the Gulf state are held.
