Qatar’s Ooredoo wins Myanmar mobile licence

Mobile penetration in south-east Asian country stands at 5 percent

Qatari telecommunications provider Ooredoo has been granted a licence to provide mobile services in Myanmar, it was reported.

TMT Finance said on Thursday that Ooredoo, formerly known as Qatar Telecom, had secured a licence along with Norway’s Telenor following a competitive tendering process by the south-east Asian country’s government.

Mobile penetration in Myanmar, which was ruled by a military junta until the introduction of fair and democratic elections two years ago, stands at about 5 percent. The subsequent lifting of US imposed sanctions has foreign investment rise exponentially.

Ooredoo CEO Nasser Marifih told Bloomberg that Myanmar was “one of the last untapped markets”.

Telecoms providers that failed in the bidding process included Bharti Airtel and France Telecom-Orange.
