Water has been released in the Dubai Canal for the first time.
The first flow is part of a testing process, with more water set to be released into the 3km stretch over the coming weeks. The canal is expected full by mid-November, when the water will be six metres deep.
The release of water in Dubai Canal is the most significant development in the three-year project, during which time three new bridges have been built, including a significant operation to raise the level of Sheikh Zayed Road.
At full operation, boats and other water transport will be able to work their way from the original mouth of the Creek all the way through the city and back out at what was once Jumeirah Beach Park.
By the time the project is completed, there will be 18 stations along the full length of Dubai Creek, including five brand new ones on the latest stretch of the project. Seven more will be created on the existing waterways to add to the six already in place.
A giant extension of land from the coast has also been constructed, which will be home to luxury residences and other amenities. When complete, there will be a shopping centre, four hotels, 450 restaurants, luxury housing, walkways and cycle paths along the new stretch.
