Renowned Iraqi painter Suad Al Attar’s contribution to the art scene has resulted in the receipt of many an award. In 1984, she won the first prize at the International Biennale in Cairo and an award of distinction at the Biennale in Malta, 1995. In 1964 she held the first solo exhibition in Iraq’s history and since moving to the United Kingdom in 1976 has enjoyed over twenty solo exhibitions. Innately creative and artistic, as her career has developed, so too has her work. Gone are the intense and dreamlike representations that used to dominate her exhibits, and in their place is a poetic take on patriotic women depicting her preoccupation with affairs in Iraq. Her work can be found at prestigious locations such as the British Museum and Gulbenkian Collection in London.
