Abu Dhabi Marine Operating Company (ADMA-OPCO), the Abu-Dhabi-based oil and gas producer, has deployed a new advanced visual system that will optimize oil exploration in the region, by enabling more accurate and speedy visualisation of oil fields. The project was implemented by Emirates Computes using the SGI Onyx 3900, an advanced visual system from Silicon Graphics Inc (SGI), the high performance computing, data visualization company.”Oil fields are complex to visualize as their shapes keep changing. The voluminous data collected to aid the exploration process keeps growing and there is a need for more advanced solutions for processing the data. Advanced supercomputers, like SGI Onyx 3900, are used to visualize the oil fields and transform the data into graphical models,” says Ahmed Al Riyami, Reservoir Applications & Systems team leader ADMA-OPCO.”The need to speed up the processing of the data prompted us to scout for more advanced and proven technologies to upgrade our visualization capabilities. Emirates Computers and the SGI Onyx 3900 was eventually selected, because its applications have been successfully used by several leading companies around the globe”, adds Al Riyami.”ADMA-OPCO was already using an SGI Origin2000 server, and wanted to increase the computer visualization capabilities available to its engineers since visual systems constitute one of the critical components of a successful oil company. The high track record of the SGI Onyx 3900 for visual systems was ideal for ADMA-OPCO after we discussed the technical issues with ADMA”, says Hani Harik, president of Emirates Computers, which deployed the solution.”We also faced another challenge of facilitating the remote operation of the system through an optical extension solution. We solved this problem by installing video and data boosters from Lightwave Communication. Together, these two systems have equipped ADMA-OPCO with visualizing equipment that delivers optimum performance under the most exacting conditions,” adds Harik. “The large data sets and numbers coming from oil fields need specialized technology to transform the data into graphics, which needs speedy and accurate processing. We are confident our collabration with Emirates Computers and the Onyx 3900 will deliver above-par performance for ADMA-OPCO’s oil exploration activities in the region”, adds Gilbert Soufan, territory manager, Middle East, SGI.
