Earth Decision, a provider of shared-earth models for asset teams, and Aramco Overseas Company (AOC), a subsidiary of Saudi Aramco, have announced the commercial launch of GeoMorph, a new real-time earth modeling and geosteering tool.
GeoMorph utilises an earth model which is used to navigate and plan where to drill in a reservoir and can map structural and stratigraphic attributes within minutes of penetration. The earth model can record a 3D image of the reservoir, its size, porous space in rock that potentially holds hydrocarbons, and its content.
“GeoMorph will dramatically shorten rig downtime by enabling models to be re-interpreted in minutes and hours, rather than days and weeks,” said Jean-Claude Dulac, CEO and founder of Earth Decision.
GeoMorph has been integrated in GOCAD by Earth Decision and applied successfully on Saudi Arabia’s Ghawar oil field, where it picked up well log data and updated its models of the rock immediately. Geosteering was used to steer the drillbit through particular zones of interest, using available geologic information.
GeoMorph inventor, Roger Sung said: “In complex geological settings, adjusting the direction of the drill bit in real time with an ‘on-the-spot’ roadmap can make or break the success of a well.”
GeoMorph will be available for fast model updating as part of Earth Decision’s GOCAD Suite.
Saudi Aramco has opened new Aramco Overseas Company (AOC) offices in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and Shanghai, China. “Saudi Aramco has strong ties with some Malaysian manufacturers and service providers, and we are eager to enhance and expand on these relationships,” said Abdulaziz Al-Khayyal, Saudi Aramco senior vice president of refining, marketing and international. The main task of the offices will be to focus on the strategic sourcing of new companies involved in the manufacturing and contracting of material for Saudi Aramco. Its main function will be to identify and assess manufacturer capability and performance, focusing on material supply services and inspection.
Gates Fleximak, formerly ENZED-Fleximak, has expanded its available product range. For the first time, Gates’ roughneck drilling hoses will be available direct from within the UAE. “The move gave us ready access to Gates high-performance design, development and testing resources, which will expand our potential product offering to our customers,” said Kim Henderson of Gates Fleximak. “The concept we’re working with is speed of delivery. We import the hosing in 90-foot lengths and then custom make the products at our facility in Jebel Ali. We can quote in 24 hours and deliver in about three days. Previously, the product would have to be imported from the US, with delays of up to six weeks.” The hoses are Grade D (5000psi) and Grade E (7500psi and 10 000psi). Gates Fleximak has sites around the Gulf, including branches in Jebel Ali, Abu Dhabi, Doha, Dammam and Jubail.
MESC Specialised Cables Company will supply Oman with US $2.5 million worth of instrumentation cables for the ORC-Mina Al Fahal Isomerisation Unit Project. The isomerisation unit will improve the octane rating of straight run gasoline as well as converting C4, C5 and C6 feed streams into their various isometric equivalents. The feedstock for the unit will be a mixture of light naptha that is being produced in the refinery and condensate from Oman liquefied natural gas. “Yet another significant gain this year has been our expansion into new markets. We are proud to…be able to compete in many areas,” said Al Karram, regional manager of MESC Specialised Cables Company.
