The London based and Saudi owned newspaper Asharq Al Awsat has added Baghdad to the list of countries in which it is published, bringing the total to fifteen countries, the paper said today (August 11).The paper, which was banned from Iraq in 1990, is widely read in the Arab world and by Arab expatriates living abroad with an estimated circulation of 250,000. Its main rival is the London based and Saudi owned Al Hayat newspaper with an estimated circulation of 300,000.Asharq Al Awsat has a strategic alliance with the Lebanese satellite Future channel owned by Prime Minister Rafic Hariri, while Al Hayat has tied up with the Lebanese Broadcasting Corporation (LBC).Since the fall of Baghdad on April 9, some 150 newspapers have sprung up throughout Iraq.
