UAE app Botim lit up the Burj Khalifa on Thursday as fintech firm Astra Tech officially launched its money transfer service.

Botim, recently acquired by Astra Tech, uses MoneyGram to allow a reported user base of 100m people to send money in real time to more than 150 countries while chatting on the app.

The feature was launched this year and already has thousands of users since launch.

The “ultra-app” took to the side of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai to mark the launch of the money transfer campaign.

The new service allows users to transfer funds instantly to their bank accounts, mobile wallets, and over 400,000 cash pick-up locations across countries including India, Pakistan, Morocco, Uganda, South Africa, and the USA.

The app’s fintech services are powered by Payby Technology Projects, a licensed entity that is supervised and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE.

Abdallah Abu Sheikh, Co-Founder and CEO of Astra Tech, BOTIM’s parent company, said: “We are thrilled to launch this all-new chat-enabled fund transfer feature that will change the lifestyle of our users and provide them with a fast, secure, and convenient way to send money internationally.

“Our partnership with MoneyGram is a significant step towards empowering our users to lead better lives.”

Astra Tech is a UAE-based technology development and investment company that acquired Botim earlier this year. It has since been rapidly transforming the VoIP app’s capabilities to serve as the base of its Ultra app, which is set to launch in the first half of 2023.

With nearly nine million expatriates living in the UAE, this partnership positions MoneyGram to accelerate its digital growth further and promote financial inclusion in a region dominated by outbound international payment transfers, Botim’s rapidly growing app is uniquely positioned to reach up to 1.2bn users throughout MENA in the next few years, given the region’s sizeable expat population and strong demand for free VoIP services.
