Saudi Arabia has foiled a major drug-smuggling operation, according to state-run news agency SPA.

Colonel Misfir Al-Quraini, the Official Spokesman of the General Directorate of Border Guard, announced that the Kingdom foiled attempts to smuggle 35 tons and 176 kilograms of the narcotic plant khat, as well as 483.3 kilograms of hashish.

The operations were foiled by land patrols of the Border Guard in the Regions of Najran, Jazan, Asir, and Tabuk between March 6 and March 18 this year.

Colonel Al-Quraini said that the Border Guard arrested 257 smugglers, including 14 citizens, and 243 violators of the border security system.

Of these, 220 were Yemenis, and 23 were Ethiopians.

He added that the initial legal procedures against them are complete and they, along with the confiscated contraband, were handed over to the competent authority.

Earlier this month Saudi authorities thwarted an attempt to smuggle more than 2m Captagon tablets into the country hidden inside tomatoes.
