Storage vendors Sun and Imation have announced a strategic agreement to bring the development roadmap for their tape cartridges together.
“Sun is pleased to work with Imation, with its long history of technology development and innovation in removable storage media, and it is a recognised industry leader,” said Nigel Dessau, vice president and general manager, tape business unit, data management group at Sun Microsystems.
Under the new agreement, Imation will develop an extension to the existing StorageTek T9840 drive platform, and become an approved supplier to Sun StorageTek for branded LTO-2 and LTO-3 tape cartridges. The vendors will also jointly explore and develop alternative recording media technologies, including Imation’s Ulysses technology, which could potentially be integrated into Sun’s automated tape library product line.
Sun and Imation have a long-standing relationship, brought closer by Sun’s recent acquisition of StorageTek, one of Imation’s major OEM partners. Sun also selected Imation as a media manufacturer of its Sun StorageTek T10000 tape drive.
