Restrictions on events and activities in ‘various economic, tourism and entertainment facilities’ as well as shopping centres are to be gradually phased out by mid-February.

But social distancing and masks are to remain, as authorities say the UAE’s response to the pandemic has paved the way for the relaxing of regulations.

On Wednesday, the National Emergency Crisis and Disaster Management Authority (NCEMA) took to Twitter, saying: “We announce the decision to gradually cancel restrictions covering all activities and events in UAE in various economic, tourism and entertainment facilities, as well as in shopping centres and modes of transportation, aimed at reaching their full capacities by mid-February.

“A decision was also made to raise the maximum capacity of social events, including weddings and funerals, and local authorities will determine the allowed number of participants.

“Regarding mosques and places of worship, the safe distance is reduced to one metre while the pandemic will be monitored and precautionary measures will be adjusted accordingly.

“We urge the public to follow the green pass system on the AlHosn application, and local crisis and disaster teams in each emirate will decide on local capacities.”

Coronavirus cases

The news came as the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) announced that it conducted 477,945 coronavirus tests over the past 24 hours, detecting 1,538 new coronavirus cases.

Authorities praised ‘the remarkable commitment of community members and their effective contributions to the implementation of precautionary and preventive measures helped decrease the number of cases recorded, with a clear decrease in the admission rate of patients with covid19 in hospitals’.

NCEMA also tweeted: “We urge community members to adhere to the precautionary measures, by wearing face masks, avoiding overcrowded places and constantly sanitising. The health of our community is a priority and is everyone’s responsibility.”
