UAE jails 7 for sorcery, issues $13,600 fine

The UAE has jailed seven people for sorcery and fined them AED50,000 ($13,600).

The UAE Public Prosecution referred the seven defendants to courts, following a complaint filed by a man who said he had been targeted by a deception and sorcery.

In a post on social media, Public Prosecution said the accused claimed to be possessed by a jinn capable of healing and treating people.

One of the defendants claimed to have a 400-year-old jinn capable of healing people.

The UAE Public Prosecution said that, following an investigation: “The defendants were referred to the court on charges of practicing sorcery and deception, and possession of used materials for their practices.

“The court sentenced the defendants to imprisonment for a period of six months, and a fine of 50,000AED ($13,600) and judicial fees”.

The Public Prosecution noted that the acts of deceit and sorcery are a crime punishable by law according to Federal Decree-Law No. 31 of 2021 issuing the Law of Crimes and Penalties.

They called on members of the public not to deal with those who carry out such actions, and to report any suspicion or related activities to the relevant authorities.
