Donald Trump plans to turn himself in on Thursday following his indictment in Georgia on charges that he tried to overturn his 2020 election loss in the state.
Trump, who is running for re-election in 2024, announced on Monday on his social media platform, Truth Social: “I’ll be going to Atlanta, Georgia, on Thursday to be ARRESTED.”
Trump’s lawyers held extensive meetings with officials of Fulton County Jail in Atlanta and have worked out a bail, which will set him free for a $200,000 bond and other release conditions.
A key condition is that he does not attempt to threaten or intimidate witnesses.
“The defendant shall perform no act to intimidate any person known to him or her to be a co-defendant or witness in this case or to otherwise obstruct the administration of justice,” said the court filing. “The above shall include, but are not limited to, posts on social media or reposts of posts made by another individual on social media.”
Trump has denied all 13 charges levied against him, including racketeering and false statements, and insisted in his post that all this was part of a witch hunt against him.
“She (District Attorney Fani Willis) campaigned, and is continuing to campaign, and raise money on, this WITCH HUNT. This is in strict coordination with crooked Joe Biden’s DOJ [Department of Justice],” Trump posted.
Trump’s surrender and legal proceedings
Fulton County Sheriff’s Office said the surrounding areas will be in a “hard lockdown” when Trump comes to surrender. There will be barricades outside the court and US Marshals Service and the US Secret Service will join the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office to provide security to the courthouse.
Trump is the first former or serving US president ever to be indicted. The Georgia case was his fourth indictment. He faces a New York state trial in March regarding hush money paid to porn star Stormy Daniels and a federal trial in May in Florida for alleged mishandling of federal classified documents. Another indictment, in Washington federal court, accuses him of illegally seeking to overturn his 2020 election loss.
The surrender will come a day after the first Republican primary presidential debate, which Trump is skipping. He has instead decided to record an interview with former Fox News host Tucker Carlson for his YouTube channel.
He said on Truth Social: “The public knows who I am & what a successful Presidency I had. I will therefore not be doing the debates.”
