Azerbaijan and Brazil to host COP29 and COP30

Host nations for future COP climate summits revealed

COP28

The host locations of COP29 and COP30 climate summits have been revealed.

COP29 will be held in Azerbaijan in 2024, while COP30 will be staged in 2030.

The announcements came during the later stages of COP28 in Dubai, UAE.

COP29 and COP30 hosts revealed

The COP28 Presidency congratulated Azerbaijan for being chosen to host COP29 next year.

COP28 President Dr. Sultan bin Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of Industry and Advanced Technology, said: “We look forward to working together to continue building momentum on climate action, ensuring we keep 1.5°C within reach and leave no one behind”.

Mukhtar Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Azerbaijan, expressed his gratitude to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change Secretariat and the United Arab Emirates for their tireless efforts in organising this exceptional event, noting that the challenges being faced require collective work and dedication in achieving the goals and aspirations agreed upon jointly.

He said that Azerbaijan realises the critical importance of climate change mitigation efforts, the strong political will be shown by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the support of the Parties, pointing out that the member states of the Eastern European Group have been a decisive factor in Azerbaijan’s success in hosting the 29th Conference of the Parties.

He noted his country’s commitment to close cooperation with the United Arab Emirates and Brazil, the host country of the 30th Conference of the Parties, to ensure a smooth transition and to continue the joint efforts.

“We recognise the importance of the global response to climate change, and through joint initiatives, we aim to accelerate progress towards a sustainable future.”

Meanwhile, the Brazilian government announced that the decision to host COP30 in Belém, state of Pará, between 10 and 21 November 2025, will be the first time that the Amazon will host the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC.

After the announcement, the Minister for the Environment and Climate Change and head of the Brazilian delegation, Marina Silva, emphasised the importance of the Amazon in the fight against climate change.

She said: “The Amazon shows us the way, with its immense biodiversity and huge territory threatened by climate change.

“It reminds us how intertwined the three Rio Conventions are in their challenges but also in the synergistic solutions they encompass.

“Holding COP 30 in the heart of the forest is a powerful reminder of our responsibility to keep the planet within our 1.5 °C target”.
