Iraq bans alcohol import, sale and manufacturing

The move was passed by the Iraq Ministry of Justice

Iraq

Iraqi authorities have officially banned the import, sale and manufacture of alcoholic beverages according to the official newspaper (published by the ministry of justice) effective immediately.

The ministry of justice cited the decision number 322 for 2021 and its amendments on licencing outlets to sell alcohol and its renewal.

“The Ministry of Justice announced the issuance of the new issue of the Iraqi Gazette, No. (4654), which included a number of decisions approved by the Presidency of the Republic,” the,” the authority said in its official website.

The Director General of the Six Department, Haifa Shukr Mahmoud, said that the issue included the issuance of a number of decisions issued by the Federal Supreme Court No. (65 / Federal / 2021) on 8/31/2021) and (66 / Federal / 2021). On 9/29/2021) and (67) / federal / 2021 on 9/29/2021) and (68 / federal / 2021) on 10/5/2021) and (72) / federal / 2021) on 10/20/2021

The Director General added that the issue also included the issuance of the Ministerial Council of Economy Resolution No. (322) for the year 2021 amending the fees for granting licenses to shops selling alcoholic beverages and renewing them.

That decision comes after the failure of Iraqi parliament to reach a decision on alcohol due to a contradictory situation since constitution prohibits the issuance of laws that contradict Islamic law, while it stipulates the guarantee of personal freedoms.

Sources have told Arabian Business that a lucrative alcohol production business, from Dahuk to Mosul is growing by  Iraqi outlets who have started shipping alcohol products outside Iraq, where these products are being sold in neighbouring  Syrian and Turkish towns.
