The UAE has announced breaches of data laws are punishable by fines of up to AED3m ($817,000).
In a post on social media, UAE Public Prosecution shared details of the penalty for “assaulting the data of financial, commercial or economic institutions using information technology”.
Across the country it is a serious offence to infringe the data of any financial, commercial and economic institutions.
UAE data protection laws
The Public Prosecution advisory said: “Whoever obtains, acquires, modifies, destroys, divulges, makes available, cancels, deletes, amends, reproduces, publishes or republishes any confidential information or data pertaining to any financial, commercial or economic institution using information technology or an information technology means” shall be “sentenced to temporary imprisonment for a minimum term of five years and a fine ranging between AED500,000 ($136,000) and AED3m ($817,000)”.
The offences fall under Article 8 of Federal Decree Law No. 34 of 2021 on Combatting Rumours and Cybercrimes.
The information was shared as part of the Public Prosecution’s efforts to promote legal culture in the country and increase awareness of legislations in the United Arab Emirates.
