Augustus, a UAE-based new media company and the holding company of online guide Lovin Dubai, has merged all its social media channels with 7DAYS, the tabloid newspaper that closed down last month.
7DAYS Media closed at the end of December, citing a tough trading environment and challenging future global outlook for print advertising.
Augustus said in a statement that 7DAYS had amassed a social media following including a little over 40,200 followers on Instagram while the tabloid had an audience of 164,000 users on Twitter and over 74,000 likes on Facebook.
Richard Fitzgerald, editor of Lovin Dubai, said: “Social media plays a crucial role in how media is consumed today. We are delighted to take on the profiles of 7DAYS UAE both regarding assuming a broad audience that now has a gap in their daily newsfeed and accepting the responsibilities that go along with it. It is an honour and a privilege to be able to continue the legacy of 7DAYS in a small way.”
He added: “Lovin Dubai shares a lot of the same values and outlook as 7DAYS. Although we were never a national newspaper, we do report on the day-to-day events in this great country and, in particular, everything that makes Dubai tick.”
Augustus, which was set up in August 2015, has offices in JLT. It manages and operates the publishing brand Lovin’ Dubai, alongside being regional representatives for Snaplytics and other social media software.
The company was founded by Fitzgerald, and is supported by a board of advisors including Zee Kane, former CEO of The Next Web, and Helen Al Uzaizi, founder of child entrepreneur program, BizWorld UAE.
