Rishi Sunak is in line to become UK’s next Prime Minister after Liz Truss’ resignation and Boris Johnson’s step back from the race. Sunak, if elected, will be the third prime minister of the country, this year.
Set to be announced today are the candidates who will make it onto the ballot, however, if Sunak leads considerably, he will automatically become prime minister. Candidates are required to have the support of at least 100 MP’s to make it to the ballot.
Sunak has more than 150 ballot numbers backing his leadership race, Penny Mordaunt only has 25.
“I am a winner who could deliver a Conservative victory in 2024, I have the numbers (he claimed 102 supporters), I could do it if I wanted to, but now is not the time,” Boris Johnson announced.
“Although he has decided not to run for PM again, I truly hope he continues to contribute to public life at home and abroad,” tweeted Sunak, in response to Boris Johnson’s announcement to pull out of the leadership race.
Last week, Liz Truss announced her resignation from the role of prime minster following a political storm over her mini budget, making her the shortest serving prime minister with only 44 days in office.
“I recognise though given the situation I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative party,” Truss said in her announcement.
Truss said she would continue as prime minister until a successor is chosen, which could be as soon as today, with Rishi Sunak being backed by more than 150 members of parliament.
