The terminal space at the Abha International Airport would increase to 65,000 square metres, with the first phase expected to be finished by 2028

Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, Crown Prince, Prime Minister, and Chairman of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs, has announced a new masterplan for the new Abha International Airport.

The primary objective behind this project is to create a distinctive architectural identity that resonates with the heritage of the Asir region, thereby elevating it to a prominent landmark within the kingdom.

Abha International Airport’s bold expansion

The ambitious plan includes an expansion of the airport’s terminal area, increasing it to 65,000 square meters. This expansion is slated for completion by 2028, a remarkable leap from the current 10,500 square meters of the existing Abha International Airport.

The new design will also prioritise efficiency and a seamless travel experience for passengers. This transformation is set to enhance the airport’s capacity, with an anticipated annual influx of over 13 million passengers, a tenfold increase compared to the current 1.5 million capacity.

The increase is equally significant in terms of flights, which will rise from the current 30,000 to more than 90,000 flights annually. The Abha International Airport will also be equipped with 20 gates and 41 check-in counters, including seven new self-service check-in kiosks.

The profound implications of this project extend to the broader development and tourism strategies of the Asir region. The forthcoming Abha International Airport is set to boost the appeal of the Asir region as a compelling tourist spot.

Moreover, it will play a key role in realising Asir’s development and aviation objectives, aligned with Saudi Vision 2030. This involves expanding air connections to 250 destinations and facilitating the transportation of 330 million passengers.
