Apple Mac turns 25

A few days ago Apple Mac celebrated its 25th anniversary, cementing its place in the history of technology. We take a look at the Mac’s transformation through the years from a simple product to a brand in its own right today. (Getty Images)

Steve Jobs first introduced the iconic Macintosh to the world in 1984 and posed for the cover of MacWorld magazine.

The $10,000 Lisa was Apple’s first GUI-driven machine but failed to win over buyers.

The Macintosh initially suffered from a drought of software, coming with just two bundled programs.

In 1991, Apple released the PowerBook – the first Mac laptop aimed at professional users.

1998’s iMac sold 800,000 units in just 139 days, returning the firm to profitability.

Today’s Macintosh runs on Intel CPUs and can dual boot Windows XP in addition to OSX.

The notebook range now includes the Macbook Air – the world’s thinnest laptop.
