Dubai Health Authority (DHA) on Tuesday announced that it has started implementing a barcode system in all its pharmaceutical transactions in DHA hospitals and health centres.
The DHA said in a statement that the new system aims to ensure the safety of patients by reducing the chances of any mistakes when dispensing medication.
The authority is implementing the new system in coordination with the biggest international companies that supply medication, it said in a statement.
Humaid Al Qatami, chairman and director general of the DHA said the move is part of a “notable transformation” in its systems and services.
He said the barcode system provides “comprehensive and intelligent solutions” in the management of pharmaceuticals and drug dispensations, using the world’s most widely used barcode system, GS1 Standards.
Dr Ali Al Sayed, director of pharmaceutical services department at DHA said the system is the first step in a larger project that aims to ensure the supply chain and the safety of drugs supplied to the authority and to avoid any counterfeiting and cheating with drugs.
He said that the authority will be working with GS1 in the next phase to ensure the safety of medication, without giving any further details.
