Dubai Police bust street racers speeding at ‘up to 300kph’

81 reckless drivers have vehicles impounded, could face up to AED100,000 fines

Dubai Police has nabbed a gang of street racers who were caught travelling at speeds of up to 300 kilometres per hour.

In a post on Facebook, Dubai Police said it had seized 81 cars belonging to reckless drivers, some of which did not have number plates.

The commander in chief of Dubai Police, Major General Khamis Mattar Al Mazaina, said the vehicles had been seized mainly on Al Aweer Street and Al Khor Street.

The Gulf Today newspaper reported that the gang, who had deliberately removed their number plates in order to avoid detection, were racing in a group.

After receiving alerts from other road users, patrol teams from the Dubai Police Traffic Department and the General Department of Operations were sent to monitor the races and gather data on individual drivers.

“The violators were driving at extreme speeds, with their vehicles’ lights off, swerving several times and almost colliding as each motorist strived to overtake other racers,” Al Mazaina said, according to the newspaper.

The Dubai Police chief added that the penalty for releasing a vehicle seized for racing without prior permission from the authorities could amount to AED100,000 ($27,000).
