Abu Dhabi’s Masdar said on Monday that wind turbines at the London Array project have begun to rotate and generate electricity.

The clean energy company, which is a 20 percent partner in the project, along with DONG Energy and E.ON, said the first 151 wind turbines became operational on Monday with the remaining 24 set to join the farm by the end of the year.

London Array project has a 630MW power generation capacity and once fully operational will boast 870MW capacity.

Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, CEO of Masdar, said in comments published by news agency WAM: “This giant project reflects our commitment to developing renewable energy projects at the level of large utilities in different parts of the world.”

Located around 20km from the Kent and Essex coasts in England, London Array will cover an area of 100 sq km in phase one on the Thames Estuary, and will be connected by undersea cables to a new onshore substation currently being built at Cleve Hill on the North Kent coast.

The London Array is set to contribute to the expanding wind energy sector of the UK.

Once completed, it will supply enough power for approximately 750,000 homes in Greater London.

Offshore represents 26 percent of the UK’s total wind capacity of which 59 percent was added in 2010, according to estimates by the World Wind Energy Association (WWEA).
