The Riyadh Development Higher Commission (RDHC) has approved a new plan for the development of the city’s downtown area containing new historic, administrative, economic and cultural districts.
According to local daily Arab News, the decision was taken to approve a plan to redevelop the area and create different zones at a meeting last week.
It will include the creation of new residential districts, parks, recreation centres, green areas and space for the city’s new metro and rapid bus networks – including the new main downtown metro station, which has been designed by Norwegian architecture firm Snohetta.
“We plan to create a new cultural heritage and tourism route, beginning from the King Abdulaziz Historical Center to the Government Palace (Qasr Al-Hukm),” said the RDHC’s head of projects and planning, Mohammed Al-Sultan.
According to the commission, more than 3,000 development projects are currently being carried out in different parts of the Riyadh region by 62 different agencies. They have a combined value of over $74bn.
