A Doha-based charity is to build 100 new homes for newly-wed Qatari couples, claiming the high divorce in the Gulf state is often due to the fact financial constraints mean new bride and grooms are forced to move in with their in-laws, it has been reported.
The charity, known as RAF, said the plans were at an early stage and would be finalised by the end of the year, The Peninsula newspaper reported.
The new couples will be given the homes free of charge for two years and their financial situation will then be reviewed, Ayed Al Qahtani, RAF’s director-general said. The new homes will be built in Al Wukair in Al Wakra, the report said.
The motivation for the plan is due to the fact the high divorce rate in the Gulf state is often due to the fact new couples have to move into rented accommodation or resort to living with the groom’s parents, which put a strain on the early years of the marriage.
“In the case of sharing their family’s home, day-to-day interference from family members and restrictions on the wife’s mobility creates unwanted tension between the newly-wed couple,” the report said.
