Burning shisha coal and cigarette butts caused 55 fires in Dubai last
year, according to Dubai Police.
A similar number of blazes were caused by unattended incense, candles,
stoves and heaters, indicating that carelessness was a main contributor to fires
in the emirate, accounting for more than one-quarter of the 394 that broke out
during 2012, the police department of criminal evidence and criminology
found.
Burning incense caused 22, or 5.5 per cent, of fires – including on
three separate occasions at the same home due to incense left unattended in a
wardrobe to make clothes smell better.
Cooking appliances and heaters caught alight 30 times, while unsecured
electronic devices that short circuited led to 151 fires. Building materials
such as bitumen left at construction sites also caused several fires, the report
shows.
