Abu Dhabi’s Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has announced the launch of a new project for delivery riders in the capital. The ‘Delivery Riders Hub’ initiative is set to be implemented by September this year.
Developed in collaboration with government entities, non-profit organisations and the private sector, the initiative aims to improve the quality of life in the emirate and promote the capital’s position as a preferred global destination to work, live and invest.
The new project will provide shaded waiting areas, comfortable seating with air conditioning and provide drinking water facilities to help riders during the summer period.
Improving delivery drivers’ work environment in Abu Dhabi
Hamad Al Mutawa, Executive Director of the Planning and Infrastructure Sector at the Department of Municipalities and Transport, said: “The pilot project reflects the department’s commitment to enhancing the public appearance of Abu Dhabi city and improving the quality of life and well-being of the Emirate’s community.
“It aims to provide a suitable and motivating working environment for delivery drivers by providing safe spaces, shaded waiting areas with comfortable seating, air conditioning, and drinking water facilities. By investing in improving the working conditions of bike drivers, we contribute to enhancing Abu Dhabi’s position as a smart and inclusive city for all.”
The initiative was implemented following interviews conducted with delivery riders to understand challenges and issues faced during the process. The new hubs will have the capacity to accommodate 10-15 individuals.
The project will especially benefit motorcyclists and ensures safety with the provision of dedicated parking spaces which resolves the need for the riders to halt on pedestrian paths.
The hubs will be used as an additional source to generate revenue as advertising and promotional locations.
