Dubai taxis will soon have water coolers installed in them, following a deal signed on Thursday between the Dubai Taxi Corporation (DTC), Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) and Al Ain Mineral Water.

The deal will mean 350 taxicabs operating to and from the airport will be fitted with mini water coolers on a three month trial basis.

If the trial scheme takes off and is popular with drivers and passengers, it is expected to be extended to the full DTC fleet.

The move is “considered the first of its kind offered to customers” and will help generate an additional source of revenue for taxi operators.

The DTC stated that the cost of any water bought by the consumer would be added to their metre bill at the end of the journey.

DTC’s CEO Abdul Aziz Malik said: “The Company will provide these mini water coolers along with the water bottles for use in our taxicabs. All water bottles to be sold through this service will bear the logo of the RTA and Dubai Taxi.”
