Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to construct a new tunnel on Al Khaleej Street, according to a statement by the Dubai Media Office (DMO).
The 1,650 metre, six-lane tunnel will run from the end of the ramp of Infinity Bridge in Deira to the intersection of Al Khaleej and Cairo Streets.
“Al Khaleej Street Tunnel is part of Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project; one of the expansive projects currently undertaken by RTA. This corridor extends 13 kilometres along Sheikh Rashid Road , Al Mina Street, Al Khaleej Street, and Cairo Street, encompassing the upgrade of 15 intersections and benefiting numerous residential and developmental communities including Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Dubai Maritime City, and Mina Rashid. It serves about one million people and is projected to cut travel times from 104 minutes to just 16 minutes by 2030,” Mattar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of RTA’s Board of Executive Directors said.
New Dubai Al Khaleej Street Tunnel
The new tunnel will have three lanes in each direction capable of accommodating up to 12,000 vehicles per hour.
It will provide free flowing traffic from Infinity Bridge towards Deira and back. The scope of works include transforming the crossing of Cairo and Al Wuheida Streets from a roundabout to traffic signals.
It will also improve Cairo Street and connect the bridge ramp from Dubai Islands to the new tunnel.
Al Tayer added the new phase “will serve the residents of Abu Hail, Al Wuheida and Al Mamzar along with development projects like Dubai Islands, Dubai Waterfront, Waterfront Market and Hamriya Port.”
Current RTA Dubai projects
The RTA is currently working on a 4.8 km project to improve Sheikh Rashid Street in Dubai. The project involves constructing three bridges totalling 3.1 km in length to accommodate over 19,400 vehicles per hour.
The first bridge is 1.3 km long with three lanes that can handle up to 10,800 vehicles per hour in both directions.
The second bridge is 780m long with three lanes for 5,400 vehicles per hour from Falcon Intersection to Al Wasl Road. The third bridge is 985m long with two lanes for 3,200 vehicles per hour from Jumeirah Street to Al Mina Street toward Al Wasl Street.
The project also includes upgrading 4.8 km of roadways along several streets, as well as constructing two pedestrian bridges and other infrastructure like street lighting, drainage, and irrigation systems, Al Tayer said.
RTA has completed several phases of the larger Al Shindagha Corridor Improvement Project. This includes opening bridges and intersections along Sheikh Rashid Road and connecting roads. They also completed five bridges to Dubai Islands and bridges along Al Khaleej Street.
Additionally, RTA finished improvements at the Falcon Intersection, including two major bridges on Al Khaleej Street and infrastructure to support over 24,000 vehicles per hour. Work continues on tunnels and intersections as part of this project.
