Dubai’s The Surpluss becomes first UAE-based UN global climate campaign accelerator

This global campaign is dedicated to spurring climate action among non-state actors with the aim of halving global emissions by 2030

Dubai-based sustainability exchange, The Surpluss, has achieved a new milestone by becoming an official accelerator for the UN-backed Race to Zero initiative.

This global campaign is dedicated to spurring climate action among non-state actors with the aim of halving global emissions by 2030.

The Surpluss has earned the distinction of being the first UAE-based accelerator and is now one of just 29 organisations worldwide to receive this prestigious designation.

In aligning with the Paris Agreement’s objectives, The Surpluss is intensifying its commitment to combatting climate change and ensuring that global warming does not exceed 1.5ºC.

Their primary goal is to assist 500 UAE-based companies within the next year in taking transformative climate action, ultimately aiming to halve their emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.

The Surpluss has outlined a new approach for companies participating in their programme, encapsulated by the ‘5Ps’ of the Race to Zero campaign:

  1. Pledge: Organisations are urged to make a commitment at the highest level to reach net-zero emissions by 2050 and contribute to the critical goal of halving emissions by 2030.
  2. Plan: This step entails creating a public transition plan that includes key performance indicators to be achieved by 2030.
  3. Proceed: Companies must take concrete measures to achieve a net-zero balance, in alignment with industry advancements.
  4. Publish: Transparency is crucial, and participants are encouraged to share relevant progress on their objectives and actions, contributing to the UNFCCC Global Climate Action portal.
  5. Persuade: Aligning policy and engagement efforts to support the goal of halving emissions by 2030 and reaching net-zero emissions by 2050 is essential.

The Surpluss is also keen to accelerate the adoption of various partner initiatives designed to cater to the specific needs of SMEs struggling with climate action, including the SME Climate Hub.

The Surpluss: SMEs key to climate action

“We are incredibly honoured to be given such a distinction, and wholeheartedly believe our mandate of radical collaboration being a necessary pre-requisite for accomplishing the most pressing challenges of our time,” Rana Hajirasouli, the Founder of The Surpluss said.

She also highlighted the importance of SMEs in the global economy and The Surpluss’s commitment to making them an integral part of the climate action agenda.

“Accelerators help drive us faster on the race by mobilising non-state actors around the world to take ambitious climate action to halve global emissions by 2030 and provide critical support as they deliver a healthier, fairer zero-carbon world by 2050,” Tessa Ferry, Race to Zero lead at the Climate Champions Team, added.

In this new role, The Surpluss will collaborate within a global coalition of leading net-zero initiatives, working to create more inclusive and resilient economies.

They are committed to extending their support beyond their own membership base and will organise a series of monthly on-boarding events to assist companies in initiating their climate commitments.
