ENOC announces ban on use of single-use plastics across its operations, head office

It joins a growing list of UAE companies including top retail brands Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Choithrams, Spinneys, Waitrose, Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Spar to support the government policy

ENOC Group has announced its decision to ban use of single-use plastics across its operations as well as in its head office, joining a growing list of companies in the UAE to align with the country’s vision of promoting an inclusive green economy.

The Environment Agency of Abu Dhabi (EAD) announced a ban on the use of single-use plastic bags from June, while the Dubai Executive Council has approved a policy to limit single-use plastic bags by imposing a tariff of 25 fils on bags used for carrying goods starting from July 1.

ENOC Group, which announced in March this year that it would begin phase-out of single-use plastics, also said it has achieved a 100 percent single-use plastic free environment across its business units and corporate departments.

Abu Dhabi’s top retail brands such as Carrefour, Lulu Hypermarket, Choithrams, Spinneys, Waitrose, Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Spar had also announced earlier their commitment to implementing Abu Dhabi’s single-use plastic ban.

Besides, several agency partners from the government sector have also implemented initiatives to support the policy, while many restaurants are also launching initiatives to reduce the consumption of single-use plastics.

“As a leading energy player, we understand the importance of implementing sustainable best practices across our network, such as the elimination of single-use plastics,” said Saif Humaid Al Falasi, Group CEO of ENOC.

“Corporate social responsibility is at the heart of ENOC’s decision-making process, and we aim to be a model for organisations in positively impacting our communities,” Al Falasi said.

The company said since 2020 it has prevented approximately 14 tons of plastic waste from entering landfills and saved roughly AED 400,000 due to the elimination of single-use plastics.

The single-use plastics that have been banned across ENOC’s network include straws, cups, single-use water bottles, plastic shopping bags, plastic bottle caps, food wrappers, plastic lids, stirrers, and foam takeaway containers.

Additionally, ENOC has also reduced its paper consumption.

As alternatives to single-use plastic items used in its operations, ENOC has switched over to more sustainable items such as paper bags, wooden straws, water dispensers with reusable bottles and recyclable lids.
