The UAE and Oman have signed a deal to build a new $3 billion railway for both freight and passengers.

Oman Rail and Etihad Rail will create a joint venture to implement and operate the railway network, the Oman News Agency has reported.

The plan calls for passenger trains to travel up to 200 kilometres per hour, the report said, and will connect Abu Dhabi with Sohar to the north of Muscat. The passenger trains are designed to reduce travel time from Sohar to Abu Dhabi to 1 hour 40 minutes, and from Sohar to Al Ain to 47 minutes.

The new JV will receive funding of about $3 billion.

The UAE’s Etihad Rail has been building a country-wide railway network that will link all the emirates and allow people to travel seamlessly via train. Earlier it signed four agreements with international firms for rail operations, maintenance, and passenger stations.
