UAE identity cards are mandatory for all Traffic and Licensing Authority (TLA) transactions in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and the Western Region, officials have said.
However, in neighbouring emirate Dubai, other forms of identification like passports or labour cards will suffice, the Khaleej Times reports on Wednesday.
Abdul Aziz Al Mamari, director of public relations and marketing EIDA, told the paper: “Traffic transactions cannot be completed without ID cards.”
He said the EIDA’s computer system has been programmed not to accept transactions without an identity card. Officials delayed a decision making it compulsory for all traffic transactions in the emirates to be completed using an ID card as proof of identity after a surge in applications swamped centres.
Al Mamari told the paper he did not forsee another rush with the latest announcement.
Meanwhile, Ahmed Hashem Bahrozyan, CEO of the RTA’s Licensing Agency, told the paper: “There is no compulsion for customers to produce Emirates ID cards to avail our services.”
