An automated system which alerts emergency services in the event of a vehicle accident is to be introduced across the UAE.
FAAZA, an eCall system launched by the Telecommunications Regulatory Authority, reports an accident to the nearest police station within ten seconds. The message includes vehicle type, location, fuel type and number of passengers inside the vehicle.
Once sent, police in the operations room can make contact and speak with passengers to check their condition.
The technology will be compulsory in all vehicles driven into the UAE from 2021.
Mohamed Jadah, director wireless networks and services, told a press conference: “The importance of this new system comes from the fact that it shortens response time to accidents and provides relevant authorities with the information necessary for rescue and ambulance operations, thereby playing a central role in reducing the number of deaths and serious injuries.”
All vehicles sold in the European Union have been fitted with the device since April 2018, in a bid to cut the number of road deaths.
By 2021, any vehicle not fitted with Fazaa will not be approved for entry into the UAE by the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology.
It is unclear if the technology will be fitted to existing vehicles.
