Dubai bans single-use plastic bags from June 1

Dubai has announced a ban on all single-use plastic bags starting June 1.

“As of June 1, 2024, Dubai takes a stand against single-use bags. Make the switch to reusable cloth bags & be part of the change,” Dubai Muncipality said via X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday.

Banned single-use bags include:

  • Any bag thinner than 57 micrometres
  • Plastic bags
  • Paper bags
  • Bags made from biodegradable plant materials
  • Biodegradable bags

Single-use bags that are exempted from the ban:

  • Any bag thicker than 57 micrometres
  • Bags for wrapping vegetables, meat and chicken
  • Bread bags
  • Garbage bags

Until the ban comes into force on Saturday, June 1 – The AED25 fils charge for single-use plastic bags will remain in effect.
