UK’s Prince William and Boris Johnson meet UAE President to ‘reinforce close bond’ between nations

Through his work as President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed made a personal contribution to regional stability and conservation which will long be remembered, the UK Prime Minister said

UK’s Duke of Cambridge Prince William and Prime Minister Boris Johnson have visited the UAE to pay their condolences following the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the second President of the United Arab Emirates and 16th ruler of Abu Dhabi, died at age 73 on Friday, May 13.

UK’s Boris Johnson met with the new UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed in Abu Dhabi to “reinforce the close bond” between the two countries.

“I am deeply saddened to hear of the death of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates and ruler of Abu Dhabi. He was a wise and respected leader who will be missed enormously,” Boris Johnson said in a statement issued on the news of Sheikh Khalifa’s passing.

“Through his work as President and Sheikh he has made a personal contribution to regional stability and conservation which will long be remembered. I know that the long and deep ties, which unite our countries, will continue and through our cooperation and friendship, we can ensure peace, prosperity and justice in the world.”

Boris Johnson added: “I would like to offer my sincere condolences to the people of the UAE.”

The UAE Federal Supreme Council voted unanimously for Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to assume the country’s presidency on Saturday, May 14.

The UK Prime Minister’s visit to Abu Dhabi was accompanied by a number of visits by senior heads of state and global leaders, including Bahrain’s King Hamad bin Isa bin Salman Al Khalifa; the President of the Republic of Indonesia, Joko Widodo; the King of Malaysia, Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah; and the Governor-General of Australia, David Hurley, among others.

The world leaders and their accompanying delegations also congratulated Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan for being elected the UAE President, and wished him good luck to continue the journey of the founding fathers for further development and progress, the state-run news ageny, Wam, reported.
