Inside The Mukaab: Saudi Arabia’s cube-shaped megaproject in New Murabba

Set to be the largest built structure in the world, here is what is inside Saudi’s The Mukaab

Saudi Arabia has launched a new project which is set to be the world’s largest modern downtown – New Murabba, scheduled for completion in 2030, the megaproject will house one of the largest built structures in the world, The Mukaab.

Inspired by the modern Najdi architectural style, the Mukaab will feature first-of-its-kind facilities and will be an immersive destination that blends digital and virtual technology with the latest holographics.

‘A gateway to another world’

The “Mukaab” will encompass a tower atop a spiral base, and a structure featuring 2 million sqm of floor space that will be a premium hospitality destination with a multitude of retail, cultural and tourist attractions, along with residential and hotel units, commercial spaces, and recreational facilities.

The cubic shape of the “Mukaab” will ensure the utilisation of space to accommodate the technologies necessary to develop the icon. The façade of the structure will feature delicately carved geometric motifs as a tribute to the kingdom’s rich Islamic history.

The structure will measure 400m x 400m x 400m, big enough to hold over 20 Empire State Buildings – the 102-story New York skyscraper.

The Mukaab aims to make Riyadh one of the top 10 most livable cities in the world.

The destination is set to offer a 360-degree experience to residents and visitors, featuring:

The Mukaab will also hold the world’s largest open-air entertainment space measuring 160,000 square metres, and sitting 400 metres high at the top of the structure. The site will offer 360-degree views of Riyadh.

New Murabba

The project, announced by Crown Prince Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, will contribute to Riyadh’s future development in line with Saudi Vision 2030 and add SAR180 billion to non-oil GDP while also creating 334,000 direct and indirect jobs.

New Murabba will be situated at the intersection of King Salman and King Khalid roads to the North West of Riyadh, over an area of 19 square kilometers, which will offer more than 25 million sqm of floor area, featuring more than 104,000 residential units, 9,000 hotel rooms, and more than 980,000 sqm of retail space, as well as 1.4 million sqm of office space, 620,000 sqm of leisure assets, and 1.8 million sqm of space dedicated to community facilities.

The upcoming development aims to provide a distinct lifestyle by offering living, working, and entertainment facilities within a 15-minute walking distance. Additionally, the project will feature an internal transportation system to ensure convenience for residents. The development is expected to be located around a 20-minute drive from the airport.
