Nakheel has awarded a US $272 million (1 billion dirham) infrastructure contract to Khansaheb Civil Engineering to develop the first phase of its family-oriented residential community, Al Furjan.
Khansehab won the contract through a tendering process after beating off competition from other infrastructure providers in Dubai. The scope of work will include the completion of all infrastructure works for phase one of Al Furjan.
According to Nakheel, work on the first phase is to commence in the third quarter of 2008 and completion is expected in the third quarter of 2011 for over 2000 villas and terrace homes. But a source close to the project said that work on the development has already commenced.
Al Furjan, meaning ‘a collection of houses or a small village’, comprises four communities with more than 4000 homes which will be defined by individual neighbourhood centres.
These centres and other amenities, such as schools, are designed to be within easy walking distance of homes.
The Project Manager is Turners International.

Nakheel’s projects are conservatively estimated to be worth $80 billion. Upon completion, Nakheel’s waterfront projects will have added more than 1,000km of shoreline to Dubai’s coastline.
