Abu Dhabi signs 5-year energy partnership with Colombia focusing on renewables

The agreement will see the DoE and Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy explore funding developments in areas such as hydrogen and large-scale renewable energy

Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE) has signed an initial agreement with its Colombian counterpart to explore opportunities in the clean energy sector.

The MoU, which was signed in the UAE capital, sets out a five-year-long collaboration between the two entities to share knowledge and expertise, and explore financing and developing clean energy projects.

“The energy sector is in constant need of more expertise in order to embrace advanced energy technologies, upgrade the sector’s infrastructure, and provide it with trained professionals, capable of achieving all of our strategic goals,” DoE undersecretary Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, said in a statement.

The agreement will see the DoE and Colombia’s Ministry of Mines and Energy explore funding developments in areas such as hydrogen and large-scale renewable energy.

The pair also committed to develop projects in geothermal, onshore and offshore wind energy, solar, biomass, and other clean energy technologies.

They also agreed to facilitate mutual visits by experts from both government bodies to follow up on joint activities, the DoE said.

“Colombia currently bets on energy transition as the mean to achieve and guarantee a reliable, self-sufficient and resilient energy matrix,” Colombian Minister Diego Mesa said.

He added: “We recognised it as a shared goal with the UAE and therefore, decided to establish a strategic alliance between the Ministry and the DoE that will allow us to complement and promote the efforts of both nations to rapidly deploy non-conventional renewable energies, develop low-carbon technologies, and tackle and reverse the effects of climate change.”
