Egypt has signed two memoranda of understanding with Syria covering the export of natural gas and petroleum products, in a move aimed at strengthening regional energy cooperation and reinforcing Egypt’s position as a regional energy hub.

The agreements were signed between the petroleum ministries of the two countries, the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources said in a statement issued on Monday.

Under the first memorandum, Egypt will supply natural gas to Syria for electricity generation. The arrangement will utilise Egypt’s existing energy infrastructure, including floating regasification units and the national gas transmission network, enabling gas deliveries without the need for major new infrastructure investments.

The second memorandum addresses Syria’s demand for petroleum products. Discussions held alongside the agreement also explored potential areas of technical cooperation, including the rehabilitation of Syria’s gas and petroleum infrastructure. This cooperation would draw on Egyptian expertise in the development, operation and maintenance of energy facilities.

The ministry said the agreements form part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand its role as a regional energy hub by leveraging its infrastructure and technical capabilities to support neighbouring markets.

The accords with Syria follow a series of recent regional energy agreements signed by Egypt. In recent months, Egypt has reached similar arrangements with Lebanon and Cyprus as part of efforts to expand gas exports and enhance the integration of energy networks across the Eastern Mediterranean.

Egypt has invested heavily in gas production, processing and export infrastructure in recent years, positioning itself as a key centre for regional energy flows.
